In the end though, all these Bears don't bring much to the deck on their own, just vanilla creatures that get most of their value when Ayula is on the battlefield. These range from terrible ( Razorclaw Bear), to decent ( Werebear), to good ( Chameleon Colossus) when paired with Ayula, Queen Among Bears. We get a few more options to work with if we add Changelings to the mix, which count as Bears (along with everything else). If you check for Bear creatures in Scryfall, there aren't a whole lot to work with. Your playgroup furbids you from playing Bear Tribal because the puns are unbearable. You're a park ranger that is regularly outwitted by bears. You want to play only the strongest decks available. You want a flexible deck that can win by Going Tall and Going Wide. You like surprising people with a powerful deck when they expected just a garbage meme deck.So that's the version of Ayula I'll be talking about here: a Bear Tribal list that wins primarily by Going Tall with Ayula, Queen Among Bears, but can also Go Wide with Bear tokens. We need to protect Ayula at all cost, and we want to pick a single Bear on the battlefield to pump up and fight with, so combining the two goals leads to a simple strategy: pump up Ayula, Queen Among Bears, protect her, attack with her, and maul anything that gets in our way. Therefore we're encouraged to focus on pumping up a single Bear with Ayula's +1/+1 counters and other pump methods ( Become Immense). Ayula's fight trigger is better the bigger your fighting Bear is, so it can take on even the biggest creatures your opponents have. Therefore we must ensure that our queen is protected against removal and stays on the battlefield. Without her, our Bears are just, well, 2/2 vanilla creatures for the most part. Ayula, Queen Among Bears is by far the best Bear Tribal payoff card in our deck.I'm pawsitive best version of Ayula, Queen Among Bears will be a Voltron route, an archetype she naturally falls into, for two reasons: However, I'd argue that the best Ayula decks aren't focused on just Going Wide: in fact, their main way of winning will be to Go Tall, aka Voltron it up! From there, you can slap down some generic anthems like Adaptive Automaton, Coat of Arms, Vanquisher's Banner and Door of Destinies to turn your army of 2/2's into a force to be reckoned with! This is the route I think most brewers will follow (if there are other masochists like me out there), and it's a good direction to take. These are some of the best bear-related cards so there's no reason not to run them in any Bear Tribal deck. The Bear Tribe has a few excellent token producers: Ayula's Influence, Words of Wilding, Bearscape, and Grizzly Fate are solid ways that we can fill the board with Bears, triggering Ayula, Queen Among Bears a whole bunch of times making big fightin' Bears. It's no surprise that our deck is going to win via combat damage, but then the question is: are we going to win with one very big angry Bear, or a sloth of angry Bears? (Yes, that's the correct term for a group of bears. She's literally the sole reason why Bear Tribal has gone from "bearly functional" to "clawsome!"īears do one thing very well: mauling people's faces. Our queen basically carries the entire deck. Very importantly, she's only 2cmc, so she comes out early and we can afford to recast her a few times over the course of a game. But it can be done, it will be done, all thanks to the one (and ONLY) official Bear Tribal support card ever printed: Ayula, Queen Among Bears.Īyula has to bear a heavy load to carry this tribe, but she's the best we could've hoped for: she turns all your Bears into hyper-efficient removal and grows them. When Grizzly Bears is one of the better Bears available in the tribe, you know it's gonna be a grizzly task to make something good while keeping the spirit of the tribe intact. The power level of the Bear Tribe is overall. Something you can sleeve up and surprise folks with how good it is. No, I'm gonna take care of the teddy-ous task of researching the crap out of this deck and present to you the highest koalaty Bear Tribal deck I can come up with. That's not what we do here on Budget Commander. But unlike most Ayula decks, I'm not going to just lazily throw together every single card that says "Bear" on it, toss in some Forests, and call it a day. And I'll give you what you want, you naughty people. You want filthy, filthy jank with a big scoop of unbearable puns on top. Look, I know why you people picked Ayula, Queen Among Bears: you want spicy memes.
