For other antagonists in Berserk, see the general antagonists page. This page is for the Godhand, their Apostles, and beings who have been created through the Apostles' powers. Lastly, some tropes are going to be spoilers because of their mere presence. Character bios in particular are likely to discuss late events in the manga. The middle part is the bird's head, and the two lines on the side are its wings.Guts | Griffith / Femto | Casca | Guts's Companions | Band of the Hawk | Kingdom of Midland | Antagonists ( Godhand and Apostles) | Other Characters | Video GamesīEWARE OF UNMARKED SPOILERS! While we make an effort to cover some of the most important spoilers, we cannot guarantee that every potential spoiler will be hidden, or that those that are will be hidden consistently. Still, dedicated fans might read into it and suggest that the Brand's upper half represents the falcon, or Griffith's personal symbol. It even appears in the Berserk Prototype chapter from the late 1980s-a story that has no real connection to the main Berserk series. It's likely that Miura simply invented the Brand of Sacrifice himself, and it was never meant to represent anything too specific. These runes vary greatly in shape and purpose, such as to prevent barrels from leaking, to inspire fear in enemies, or to win a court case. More generally-and in a roughly similar vein-the Brand of Sacrifice resembles Icelandic magical staves, or sigils that were meant to provide magical effects. Amusingly, the Brand of Sacrifice looks similar to the Bluetooth symbol, which itself combines two Viking runes H and B to refer to Harald Bluetooth. There is no concrete proof that author Kentaro Miura directly based the Brand of Sacrifice on any specific real-life symbol, though many Berserk fans agree that this particular Berserk symbol generally resembles Viking runes in its shape and style. The Egg of the Perfect World, a unique character in the Conviction story arc, had a Brand of Sacrifice on his tongue. Other, more minor Band of the Hawk members briefly had the Brand on a wider variety of body parts, with Corkus having one on his forehead, Judeaus' being on his left palm, Pippin's on his right arm, and Gaston's on his left shoulder. Casca's Brand is on the upper part of her left breast, and it too bleeds when Apostles approach. After meeting the young witch Schierke, Guts got a reprieve when Schierke's mentor Flora applied a magical talisman over the Brand, nullifying its effects-including its ability to lure in Apostles. Guts' brand is on his neck, and it bleeds practically every night when Apostles and ghosts attack him after the sun sets. In the Black Swordsman story arc, the Count's daughter Theresia almost received the Brand as well, but she escaped that fate. Similarly, Guts' lover and fellow mercenary Casca bears a Brand of Sacrifice, and a variety of more minor, deceased characters were all known to bear the Brand as well. Among the main cast, the antihero swordsman Guts is the most famous and important example, with this demonic Berserk symbol largely defining Guts' life ever since he received it. The branded individual will have Apostles and ghosts chasing after them every night, drawn by the Brand, and those ghosts can touch the branded individual because that person resides in the interstice between the Physical and Astral Worlds.Ī handful of Berserk characters have been seen bearing the Brand of Sacrifice, some of them more important than others. Worst of all, anyone who wanders the world with a Brand of Sacrifice is a constant target, representing how their flesh and soul "belong" to the God Hand as an outstanding debt for someone else's bargain. However, if the God Hand is near, the effects are much stronger. In some cases, a Brand of Sacrifice may become etched into the victim's skin, as though carved into the flesh, and may ooze blood and cause minor pain when Apostles are near. This sinister Berserk symbol may appear as a flaming tattoo on the victim's skin, usually on the head, neck, or torso. A few exceptions exist in Berserk, but as a whole, receiving the runic Brand of Sacrifice is one of the last things that will ever happen to the person who receives it. Only moments after a Brand of Sacrifice appears on the intended victim, that person will soon be killed, and it's rare for anyone to bear the Brand for more than a moment or two. Anyone with a Behelit (a supernatural egg-shaped object with ties to the Astral World) can summon the God Hand this way and offer someone as their sacrifice to become a new Apostle or a supernatural creature that has shed its former humanity.
